On the Vulnerability of Exponent Recodings for the Exponentiation against Side Channel Attacks

چکیده
In this paper we propose a new side channel attack, where exponent recodings for public key cryptosystems such as RSA and ECDSA are considered. The known side channel attacks and countermeasures for public key cryptosystems were against the main stage (square and multiply stage) of the modular exponentiation (or the point multiplication on an elliptic curve). We have many algorithms which achieve fast computation of exponentiations. When we compute an exponentiation, the exponent recoding has to be carried out before the main stage. There are some exponent recoding algorithms including conditional branches, in which instructions depend on the given exponent value. Consequently exponent recoding can constitute an information channel, providing the attacker with valuable information on the secret exponent. In this paper we show new algorithms of attack on exponent recoding. The proposed algorithms can recover the secret exponent, when the width-w NAF [9] and the unsigned/signed fractional window representation [5] are used. key words: side channel attack, exponent recoding, RSA cryptosystems, elliptic curve cryptosystems

متن کاملROSETTA for Single Trace Analysis Recovery Of Secret Exponent by Triangular Trace Analysis
In most efficient exponentiation implementations, recovering the secret exponent is equivalent to disclosing the sequence of squaring and multiplication operations. Some known attacks on the RSA exponentiation apply this strategy, but cannot be used against classical blinding countermeasures. In this paper, we propose new attacks distinguishing squaring from multiplications using a single side-...
متن کاملAttacking OpenSSL using Side-channel Attacks: the RSA case study
We show that RSA implementation present in OpenSSL can be successfully attacked using sidechannels. In OpenSSL, the modular exponentiation is implemented using m-ary method, where a table of size 2m entries is precomputed. The exponent is divided into words of m-bits each and the algorithm proceeds one word at a time using the precomputed table. Furthermore, to protect against side-channel atta...
متن کاملExploiting Collisions in Addition Chain-Based Exponentiation Algorithms Using a Single Trace
Public key cryptographic algorithms are typically based on group exponentiation algorithms where the exponent is private. A collision attack is typically where an adversary seeks to determine whether two operations in an exponentiation have the same input. In this paper we extend this to an adversary who seeks to determine whether the output of one operation is used as the input to another. We ...
متن کاملHigh-Order Attacks Against the Exponent Splitting Protection
Exponent splitting is a classical technique to protect modular exponentiation against side-channel attacks. Although it is rarely implemented due to efficiency reasons, it is widely considered as a highlysecure solution. Therefore it is often used as a reference to benchmark new countermeasure proposals. In this paper, we make new observations about the statistical behavior of the splitting of ...
